Overview:
Helen Keller Intl seeks a dynamic and visionary Managing Director to lead its programs and projects in Central and West Africa. The role involves strategic leadership, operational oversight, financial management, and fostering partnerships to advance the organization’s mission of combating poverty, improving health, nutrition, and vision in over 20 countries.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership:
- Develop and implement long-term vision, goals, and strategies for the region.
- Align regional priorities with organizational goals as part of the Executive Leadership Team.
- Drive agile decision-making and adaptability in resource deployment.
- Evaluate performance against goals and ensure adherence to ethical standards.
- Program Delivery, Learning, and Operations:
- Oversee daily operations to ensure high-quality, efficient program delivery.
- Achieve key performance indicators (KPIs) for funders, governments, and the organization.
- Foster a learning culture through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and cross-functional cooperation.
- Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and technological advancements.
- Business Development and Growth:
- Lead efforts to expand impact and maintain financial viability.
- Oversee business development to drive growth in core programs (Eye Health, Neglected Tropical Diseases, Nutrition).
- Position Helen Keller competitively in the region and explore new program areas.
- Financial Oversight:
- Manage financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
- Ensure proper financial controls to protect organizational assets.
- Optimize resource allocation for financial viability.
- Risk Management and Compliance:
- Ensure adherence to legal, regulatory, and governance standards.
- Identify and mitigate financial, operational, and industry-related risks.
- Balance risk and opportunity in decision-making.
- Influencing, Advocacy, and Partnerships:
- Build and maintain relationships with governments, private sector actors, and partners.
- Advocate for conducive policy environments and collaboration opportunities.
- Strengthen Helen Keller’s thought leadership and program impact.
- Team Leadership and Development:
- Lead and mentor Country Directors and technical professionals.
- Foster a positive, inclusive culture aligned with Helen Keller’s values (Compassion, Courage, Integrity, Rigor).
- Oversee recruitment, development, and retention of talent.
- Support organizational change with minimal disruption.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (MBA or relevant Master’s preferred) plus 15+ years of senior-level experience in a complex international organization, or equivalent combination.
- Commitment to Helen Keller’s mission and values.
- Proven track record in large-scale program implementation, business development, organizational change, and team leadership.
- Strong decision-making, communication, and project management skills.
- Experience working across cultures and fostering fairness and belonging.
- Knowledge of country office operations and donor requirements.
- Excellent English (oral and written); French language skills a strong advantage.
- Lived experience in Helen Keller’s operational contexts preferred.
- Ability to travel at least 30% and flex hours across time zones.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Midpoint salary: $210,000 (varies based on experience, peer salaries, and location).
