Overview:
Helen Keller Intl seeks a dynamic and visionary Managing Director to lead its programs and projects in East and Southern Africa and Asia. This executive-level role involves providing strategic leadership, overseeing operations, and driving program quality and impact to advance the organization’s mission of combating poverty through improved health, nutrition, and vision in over 20 countries.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership:
- Develop and implement long-term vision, goals, and strategies for the region, aligned with organizational objectives.
- Serve on the Executive Leadership Team to guide organization-wide strategy.
- Lead a senior management team to set localized priorities and ensure alignment across countries and departments.
- Promote agile decision-making, adaptability, and accountability for strategic and ethical goals.
- Program Delivery, Learning, and Operations:
- Oversee daily operations to deliver high-quality, efficient programs.
- Achieve key performance indicators (KPIs) for funders, governments, and the organization.
- Foster a learning culture through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and cross-functional synergy.
- Stay informed on industry trends, best practices, and technological advancements.
- Business Development and Growth:
- Drive impact and growth through business development efforts.
- Ensure new portfolio areas align with organizational perspectives and promote local leadership.
- Maintain competitive positioning in core programs (Eye Health, Neglected Tropical Diseases, Nutrition) and explore adjacent areas.
- Financial Oversight:
- Manage financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
- Ensure financial controls to protect assets and drive viability through effective resource allocation.
- Risk Management and Compliance:
- Ensure adherence to legal, regulatory, and governance standards across the portfolio.
- Identify and mitigate financial, operational, and industry risks.
- Balance risk and opportunity in decision-making.
- Influencing, Advocacy, and Partnerships:
- Build alliances with governments, private sector actors, and partners to enhance program impact.
- Advocate for policy environments that support Helen Keller’s mission.
- Strengthen stakeholder relationships to advance thought leadership and collaboration.
- Team Leadership and Development:
- Lead and mentor Country Directors and technical professionals, fostering a culture of excellence.
- Promote an inclusive, high-engagement environment aligned with Helen Keller’s values (Compassion, Courage, Integrity, Rigor).
- Oversee talent recruitment, development, and retention, supporting organizational agility and change management.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (MBA or relevant Master’s preferred) plus 15+ years of senior-level experience in a complex international organization, or equivalent.
- Commitment to Helen Keller’s mission and values.
- Proven success in large-scale program implementation, business development, organizational change, and team leadership.
- Strong decision-making, communication, and project management skills, with data-driven frameworks.
- Experience fostering fairness, belonging, and cross-cultural collaboration.
- Knowledge of country office operations and donor requirements.
- Excellent English (oral and written); French language skills a strong advantage.
- Lived experience in Helen Keller’s operational contexts preferred.
- Ability to travel 30% and flex hours across time zones.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Midpoint salary: $210,000 (varies based on experience, peer salaries, and location).
