Opportunity
Abt Associates, a major American business and government research, technical assistance, and consulting company, manages the USAID-funded Vector Control Task Order 1. Task Order 1 supports the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and USAID to plan and implement an integrated vector control approach with the overall goal of reducing the burden of malaria. Abt has implemented indoor residual spraying (IRS) for PMI since 2011, delivering high-quality IRS programs and gathering the most comprehensive vector control entomological data in the world. Under this contract, Abt will expand entomological monitoring to guide programs focused on insecticide-treated mosquito nets and IRS and continue to assist PMI in reducing the burden of malaria through IRS and capacity building in 22 African countries where malaria is endemic. Abt will also continue to support PMI in IRS monitoring and evaluation, as well as environmental compliance.
Under the supervision of the Technical Manager/ Senior Entomologist, the Entomology Coordinator will be responsible for timely and high quality field entomological work and managing the Entomology Laboratory and Insectary. .

Key Roles and Responsibilities
• Support implementation of the following set of entomological field activities:
• Establishment f sentinel sites
• Monitor malaria vector density and behavior pre- and post-deployment of vector control interventions using standard mosquito sampling methods
• Conduct wall bioassays and insecticide treated mosquito nets (ITNs) assays to evaluate the quality and residual efficacy of sprayed insecticides and net products
• Monitor malaria vector susceptibility to current and candidate insecticides in local communities
• Support the establishment and functioning of an entomology laboratory for analysis of field caught mosquitoes including PCR and Elisa
• Receive mosquito samples from the field and prepare them for the relevant laboratory analysis
• Perform ELISA tests for detection of sporozoite in mosquitoes
• Perform PCR to differentiate different species of mosquitoes and for detection of kdr alleles in mosquitoes for insecticide resistance monitoring
• Submit all lab generated data t the data clerk for entry in a timely manner and generate regular lab reports
• Support, when required, the Entomology Insectary Technicians in managing the insectary operations
• Assist with WHO susceptibility and CDC bttle assays including PBO exposures for evaluation of insecticide resistance in malaria vectors
• Assist with procurement requests related to the field and laboratory activities and keep an inventory of all field and laboratory equipment and supplies
• Participate in field activities as required
• Adhere to the Standard Operational Procedures for these activities
• Ensure proper and timely recording and entry of field data
• Perform any other duty assigned by the Technical Manager
This position may require visits to the field and sentinel sites for mosquito collection.

Preferred Skills / Prerequisites
• Bachelors Degree in Entomology, Biology, Biochemistry or other relevant field. Masters Degree in Entomology will be an added advantage
• At least two (2) years experience in entomological or veterinary work including PCR laboratory work
• Knowledge in computer skills (able to run programs such as Microsoft word, Excel)
• Good knowledge of English Language

Minimum Qualifications
• ( 3+ ) years of experience OR the equivalent combination of education and experience
