JOB ADVERT – STUDENT COUNSELLOR
Cavendish University Zambia is seeking a Student Counsellor to provide advice and guidance to students about personal and academic life, enabling them to manage the pressures of life, promote student success, provide preventative services, and respond to identified student needs. In addition, the Student Counsellor will monitor the overall psychological growth and development of the students.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop, implement, and monitor a comprehensive counselling program.
- Develop a budget for the Counselling function and monitor budget performance.
- Help students understand and overcome social or behavioral problems through individual and group counseling.
- Organise and coordinate individual, small group, and peer counselling for the University students.
- Create a database, evaluate and advise on student abilities, interests and personalities to assist them in developing realistic self-improvement goals and action plans.
- Provide advice and guidance to students about personal and academic life.
- Mediate between student(s) and University employees to improve relationships.
- Initiate and spearhead University drug awareness and prevention program.
- Plan for, implement, and monitor an effective referral and follow-up process, working collaboratively with psychologists and other mental health resources for additional support.
- Engage, consult, and collaborate with parents/guardians and University authorities for solution-finding and action plan implementation.
- Work with students to develop soft skills such as time and self-management, organisation, and effective study habits.
- Monitor Student academic performance, behaviour, and attendance, and assist with developing and implementing appropriate interventions.
- Carry out other duties as may be assigned in keeping with the functions of the position.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- PhD Counselling services or psychology from a reputable university is desirable.
- Master’s Degree in Counselling, Social Work, or Industrial Psychology.
- Bachelor’s Degree preferably in social work, Psychology, or sociology, or any other related fields.
- At least six (6) years’ working experience as a Counsellor, preferably drawn from an institution of higher learning

- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Relationship management, with demonstrated ability to work with students, diverse teams, and stakeholders.
- Excellent meeting management, organisational, and planning skills.
- Ability to pay attention to detail.
- Proven ability to multitask in a fast-paced work setting.
- Computer literacy i.e., good knowledge of computer packages like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, email among others.
- Excellent time management and customer care skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive information professionally and confidentially.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- High degree of innovation.
- Commitment to excellence.
- Excellent mentoring & counselling skills.
- Coordination and networking capabilities.
