Job description:

Purpose of the role

The Technical Superintendent – TSF will provide technical oversight, data analysis, and strategic support for the effective management of Tailings Storage Facilities. This role ensures that all TSF operations are compliant with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards. It also involves collaborating with third-party consultants, supporting remediation efforts, and providing technical insights for planning, design, and budgetary considerations.

Job & Candidate Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

1. Technical Support & Oversight

  • Provide expert technical guidance on geotechnical, civil, and structural aspects of TSF operations.
  • Lead technical initiatives including design, analysis, and optimization of tailings systems and dam structures.
  •  Coordinate and analyze geotechnical data to inform decision-making on TSF integrity and operational safety.
  •  Ownership of the design and engineering processes of the TSF.

2. Data Analysis & Risk Assessment

  • Develop and maintain databases for geotechnical, hydrological, and environmental data related to TSF.
  • Ownership of the document control system.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments, analyzing data trends and identifying potential issues to proactively manage risks.
  • Use data analysis tools to optimize tailings deposition strategies, water management, and stability of TSF structures.

3.  Project Planning & Budgeting

  • Collaborate with the TSF Manager on short-term and long-term TSF planning, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Prepare technical plans, cost estimations, and budgets for TSF projects, including ongoing maintenance, upgrades, and remediation activities.
  • Track project costs and timelines, adjusting resources as necessary to meet operational and strategic objectives.

4.  Third-Party Audits & Compliance

  • Coordinate with third-party consultants and auditors for independent assessments of TSF compliance and safety.
  • Ensure TSF activities align with relevant regulations, standards (e.g., GISTM, ANCOLD), and best practices.
  • Manage documentation and support audit processes to maintain comprehensive records of compliance and operational standards.
  • Actively manage the action list to drive implementation of remedial actions through self or operational team.

5.  Design & Remediation

  • Work closely with engineers and consultants to support the design and enhancement of TSF structures.
  • Lead or oversee remediation efforts as needed, implementing technical solutions to address and mitigate any structural or environmental issues.
  • Prepare designs and plans for TSF upgrades or new facilities, as required, ensuring technical soundness and regulatory compliance.

6. Technical Strategy & Innovation

  • Assist in developing and implementing technical strategies for TSF management, focusing on sustainability, efficiency, and risk reduction.
  • Support the manager in developing the long term/LOM tailings management strategy.
  • Stay informed on industry advancements in TSF management, data analytics, and technology to recommend innovative approaches.
  • Promote the adoption of IoT and early-warning monitoring systems to improve TSF monitoring and emergency preparedness.

7.   Training & Capacity Building

  • Provide technical training and mentoring to team members to build internal expertise and support succession planning.
  • Collaborate with corporate and site-level teams to implement Learning and Development programs for TSF operational staff.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering, or related field. Advanced degree or professional certifications (e.g., PMP, PEng, or equivalent) are an advantage.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years in a technical role within tailings management or a related field, with demonstrated experience in TSF planning, design, and management.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficient in data analysis and geotechnical modeling software (Geo-Studio with RS2, Plaxis, FLAC well regarded)
  • Knowledge of industry standards (GISTM, ANCOLD, ICOLD).
  • Strong understanding of dam and tailings storage design, pipeline systems, slurry transportation, and hydrological systems.
